About

Population is the most significant issue facing Pakistan today. The population of a country can either become an asset through effective planning and management orit cantransform itself into a severe problem causing governance, economic, political, social and environmental issues if left unchecked. In the South Asia region Bangladesh has been successful incalibrating the demographic trends and social indicators. However, Pakistan is suffering from rapid population growth which has left it vulnerable to social and economic pressures.

Being cognizant of the international obligations of Pakistan and the importance of the fundamental rights of its citizens, the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2018 took notice of the 'Alarming High Population Growth Rate in the Country' in Human RightsCase No.17599/2018andconstituteda Task Force for the purposes of developing recommendations to curb this pressing issue.Additionally, the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan in collaboration with other stakeholders organized the "NationalSymposium on AlarmingPopulation Growth in Pakistan: Call for Action" on 05.12.2018 to generate debate on the matter and to set out the course of action for tackling the same. I appreciate theefforts of the Law & Justice Commission of Pakistan and the Ministry of NHSRC in holding another national event "Resilient Pakistan: Calibrating Population and Resources" which willonce again provide an opportunity to the relevant stakeholders toreview the progress made so far, to identify the shortcomings that need to be overcome and to gather insights from national and international experts on how to proceed further.

I would also like to thank the Organizing Committee for putting together this event and extend a warm welcome to our speakers, Chairs and participants - Best wishes for an engaging event!
